Want to Raise Successful Kids? Start with Chores

If you want your children to grow into capable, confident, and successful adults, here’s one of the simplest—and most powerful—things you can do: give them chores.

At Journey Education, a Las Vegas private school serving K–8th grade students, we believe raising responsible, thoughtful kids starts at home, and continues through a school experience that supports the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. And when it comes to building confidence and character, regular household chores are a great place to begin.

Yes, your kids will probably complain (they’re kids, after all), but the science is clear: having responsibilities early in life sets children up for long-term success.

What the Research Shows

A Harvard Grant Study—one of the longest-running studies on human development—tracked people for more than 75 years to understand what creates a fulfilling, successful life. It identified two key ingredients:

  1. Love and connection
  2. A strong work ethic

That second one, work ethic, develops from meaningful contribution. From rolling up your sleeves and pitching in.

Julie Lythcott-Haims, former Stanford dean and a champion of values-based parenting, said in her TED Talk:

“The earlier kids start doing chores, the better. A ‘pitch-in’ mindset that says, ‘There’s work to do, I’ll do it’—that’s what gets them ahead in life.”

This “I can help” mindset is exactly what we nurture in our students through whole-child education and real-life learning.

Let Them Do It (Even if They Do It Badly)

Teaching responsibility means allowing kids to do things imperfectly. Even when you could do it faster or better yourself. Whether it’s emptying the dishwasher or folding laundry, it’s not just about the chore, it’s about the message: You are a capable, contributing member of this family.

It’s a lesson we reinforce at school, too. Children thrive when they are expected to contribute and are supported in doing so.

“By making them do chores,” Lythcott-Haims says, “they realize, I have to do the work of life in order to be part of life.

Raising Capable Kids at Home and at School

At Journey Education, a K–8th grade private school in Las Vegas, we don’t just focus on academics. We focus on building self-reliant, compassionate, and capable young people—kids who know how to work through challenges, help others, and take pride in their effort.

That’s what a whole-child education looks like. That’s what truly prepares students for life.

Being a Great Parent… Are You Doing Enough?

As parents, it’s natural to wonder if we’re doing enough for our children. We want to provide them with every opportunity, teach them strong values, ensure they have good manners, and set them up for academic and personal success.

Our “parent brain” makes us question whether we could have done more, taught them better, or handled situations differently.

But the truth is, there is no such thing as perfect parenting.

The best kind of parenting is where we do our best, and act with love, intention, and consistency.

At Journey Education we believe in supporting parents and students on their journey of growth and learning. Parenting isn’t about perfection; it’s about guiding our children with patience, understanding, and trust.

We all make mistakes. We’re human, learning and growing just as our children are. And that’s okay. Just as we evolve through our own experiences, our children need the space to do the same—to learn, struggle, build resilience, and develop independence. These life experiences are essential in shaping them into confident, capable individuals who will thrive in the future.

Rather than feeling guilty about our parenting choices, we can use them as opportunities to improve—not as reasons to be hard on ourselves. The most important thing we can do is to lead with love, trust the process, and have faith that every challenge our child faces will help shape them into the person they are meant to become.

At Journey Education, we understand the importance of education, character development, and a supportive learning environment. We are a private school that nurtures academic success, leadership, and emotional growth. We invite you to learn more about our K-8 program and how we partner with families to help students thrive.

DREAM BIG / THINK BIG

Can you find the words “Dream Big” and “Think Big” posted somewhere in the Journey Building? What does that mean to you?

When we first moved into our beautiful Journey campus 10 years ago, we hung several signs around the school reminding students the strength of their thoughts. Many of those signs have been replaced with similar messages, but these two still remain.

At Journey Education students are taught to work hard and be great, no matter where each child is in his/her development. It’s exciting to spend a moment in one of our classrooms and watched as students learn and discover.

Our minds are amazing tools held back only by our lack of confidence and fear of failure. Next time a discouraging or negative thought holds you back, remind yourself that your dreams are only as big as your thoughts.

So make big dreams and think big thoughts, and then go to work realizing them!
